Parking in Dogtown for 2022 St. Patrick's Day

NO PARKING ZONES

For Dogtown residents and event visitors alike, be prepared for the following parking restrictions before and on St. Patrick’s Day this year.

A "No Parking" zone will be established along the parade route. Signs will be posted in No Parking areas several days before the event. The No Parking order will go into effect promptly at 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 17 and will not end until 10:00 p.m. Cars parked in this area will be ticketed and towed! If possible, avoid parking on the parade route on Wednesday night to avoid the hassle of moving your car early in the morning!

Because we are ordering more dumpsters and portable toilets than ever before, deliveries of these items must begin on the Tuesday, March 15. Small 100-feet No Parking areas will be designated on every cross street of Tamm in both directions beginning Tuesday morning for equipment staging. Please excuse this inconvenience.

To depart the festival area: If you are parked to the west of Tamm, please depart the neighborhood heading west toward McCausland or Skinker. If you are parked east of Tamm, please depart heading east toward Hampton. Manchester will remain open throughout the day.

AVAILABLE PARKING

For event visitors who are still planning to park in Dogtown on St. Patrick’s Day, consider some of these locations that may be available.

The St. Louis Zoo will have their parking lots open for a fee. The large lot north of I-64 is accessible via Wells Drive westbound, using the traffic circle on Hampton Avenue. Please note, you cannot access this lot from eastbound on Welles via Skinker or the Tamm Avenue overpass due to street closures. The Zoo lots located off Oakland and Berthold will also be open. You can access these from Hampton either by going westbound down Oakland or westbound down Berthold.

The St. James the Greater Parish Park Lot is available for a fee, with access only from Tamm and Manchester between 6:00 and 9:00 a.m., and exiting allowed only after 3:00 p.m.

Parking is also available for a fee in the lots of the St. Louis Marketplace on the south side of Manchester. These parking lots are operated independently and are not affiliated with the Dogtown Irish Festival.

Once these lots are full, please do not attempt to park on public streets within the festival area of the Dogtown neighborhood. These streets fill up with cars very early in the morning. Out of respect to local residents and to prevent traffic congestion, instead of parking locally, please consider arranging to get a ride to and from the festival.

RIDE HAILING

We will have a ride-hailing area for both cabs and ride-sharing services on Clayton near Crescent, in the Zoo’s Frog Lot.

The festival committee strongly encourages guests to get a ride to and from the festival, as parking will be very limited in the neighborhood.

Keep in mind that cell-phone signals may be weak due to the crowd size. Please plan to walk two blocks to the east or west away from the festival area in order to hail a ride. Drivers will not be able to get close enough to pick you up near the festival area.

2022 St. Patrick's Day Accessibility Accommodations

Dogtown United recognizes the importance of providing access to all members of our community, including those with accessibility needs. We are committed to ensuring equal access to our annual celebration.

PARADE VIEWING + PARKING

Our services include prime parade route accessibility seating at Tamm Avenue and Oakland (northeast corner), an ADA toilet near the viewing area, as well as sign language interpreters at the festival stages. A limited number of parking spots will be reserved on Oakland Avenue, just east of Graham.

PORTABLE TOILETS

ADA toilets will be available at the following locations:

  • North-side of Oakland at Tamm (by ADA viewing area)

  • Pat Connolly Tavern tent area

  • Clayton at Childress and at Graham

  • Tamm at West Park (on both sides of Tamm)

  • Tamm at Lloyd (both sides of street)

  • Tamm near Manchester (east side only)

Q+A with Local Designer, Emily Stahl

You have probably already noticed the outstanding, colorful cover design of our 2022 Discover Dogtown booklets, and likely thought to yourself “Who did this outstanding, colorful cover design?”

Meet Emily Stahl

Emily is a St. Louis based designer with a love for hand lettered products, typography, and creative, customized collaboration.

Emily reached out to Dogtown United as part of her research for an upcoming project and we happy to share our expertise about the Dogtown neighborhood. When we asked if she would be willing to showcase some of her work on our Discover Dogtown booklet, she graciously agreed! Now, we are excited to tell you a little bit more about Emily and her next Neighborhood Collection.

Tell us a little bit about what has inspired the St. Louis designs you have on your website:

I have lived in St. Louis my whole life and the older I have gotten, the more I have grown to appreciate this city. Once I started my business, it just felt right to include St. Louis.

For your first St. Louis series featuring The Hill how did you decide what icons would represent the neighborhood?

Starting with The Hill neighborhood was an easy decision for me. My grandma, Dorothy Barbaglia Stahl, grew up in one of the shotgun houses on Elizabeth Ave and I grew up going to the restaurants and shops there. The Hill has always had a a special place in my heart. To create the essentials print, I did research, worked with family members and people living there and worked with The Hill Neighborhood Center to create the icons represented in the collection. A portion of The Hill Collection sales goes back to The Hill Neighborhood Center. This is a way I can give back to the community.

Can you tell us more about what you are planning for the next collection of St. Louis series?

My plan for 2022 is to launch the Dogtown Neighborhood Collection mid-February, so everyone can have their products in plenty of time for St. Patrick’s Day! I am also working on the full St. Charles collection and will be growing the neighborhood collections as well as some fresh St. Louis designs. If you have a neighborhood you want to be seen, email me at hello@emilystahl.com.

What has been your process for researching and deciding on icons to represent Dogtown?

My process started with doing research, which is how I found Dogtown United. My plans are not to make money off of the neighborhoods, I love celebrating the different cultures that St. Louis has to offer through my artistic style. A percentage of the Dogtown Collection sales will be going back to Dogtown United. I grew up going to The Hill and have family there, so that came naturally for creating The Hill Essentials. For Dogtown, I am working with Dogtown United and doing research to come up with icons that are a representation of the neighborhood.

Are there any specifics you can share with us yet about what kind of products we can expect with the series?

For the Dogtown Collection, you can expect to see 8x10 prints, card packs, pins, stickers and sticker packs. I am hoping to expand into apparel if the timeline works out.

See below for a sneak peek at some of the unique designs Emily has already created around the Dogtown neighborhood!

When can we look forward to the Dogtown collection being available?

The Dogtown Collection will be available in mid to late February. If you want to stay updated on information and to hear about the Dogtown Collection launch, follow me on social media @emilystahldesignco (Instagram, Facebook, Etsy) or by joining my email list here.

Where can we find more information about you and your design shop?

You can shop my products locally at The White Rabbit (Brentwood), RF Home Co (Kirkwood) and Cozy Shop (Main Street St. Charles). My website is www.emilystahl.com and you will be able to shop the Dogtown Collection on my Etsy Shop.

Q&A with Dogtown Little Free Pantry Founder Theresa Weisbrod

By now, almost all Dogtown residents have noticed the quaint collection of beautiful hand-painted furniture arranged on the sidewalk off of Clayton Avenue. Curiosity piqued, most have ventured closer to discover the tables, dressers and even a piano, hold a variety of treasures and basic necessities available for free to anyone who may need them.

Theresa Weisbrod and her family had the generous ideas to create the Dogtown Little Free Pantry and were delighted to discover community members were all to eager to get involved. To learn more about the Little Free Pantry and how you can help contribute, check out our Q&A with Theresa:

What gave you the idea to start the Little Free Pantry?

The Dogtown Little Free (food) Pantry was an idea my family had as a way to share excess we received with others in Dogtown who may be struggling. We began about a year ago, well into the pandemic, and found the need to be much greater than we had anticipated. As we began to supply some basic necessities to both those with housing who couldn’t make ends meet, as well as the unhoused, the Dogtown community quickly became involved and soon asked me to post needed items.

How has the Little Free Pantry changed since it first started?

Soon there were offers and requests for us to accept non food items so another cabinet was installed for personal care items. A table and chairs were added where visitors could have a pleasant place to eat or read a book they chose from the Little Free Library. The view is into our backyard where our ducks and chickens wander around and fruit trees grow. We built a hot beverage booth out of vintage doors and during the cold months supply hot water for coffee, tea, ramen, etc. This past spring a gardening/potting bench was tucked in where the neighborhood can exchange plants or seeds. My dream was to bring in a community piano and we often hear it being played, or even better, someone attempting to play! At the end of the row is a yellow double glider in the shade, another nice place to read a book. Recently we added a ‘Seasonal Items’ cabinet which stores hats, gloves and hand warmers during the winter and sun hats, water bottles and mosquito wipes in the summer. All of the cabinets and furniture are from our personal stash and were hand painted by me. We want to offer a cheerful, relaxing and unintimidating place to find some needed food or other items or just take a break from worries. Our Dogtown Little Free Pantry has become both a stop over for those in need as well as a tiny neighborhood gathering spot. Hopefully you noticed the beautiful native/zinnia garden along the street this past summer as well as the light post covered in colorful doilies! We decorate for all holidays and often celebrate with special treats. Feel free to stop by. We even have a water bowl for your dog!

What feedback have you received from the community about the Little Pantry?

Our Dogtown neighbors and businesses, as well as friends and families outside of Dogtown have generously contributed whenever there’s a need or special request, making the Dogtown Little Free Pantry the success that it has become.

What types of items do you encourage people to bring?

I have been asked what kind of items I encourage people to bring. Food items that are ready to eat and ‘easy open’ are always needed for those who are unhoused. Canned or packaged food is appreciated by those who have access to a kitchen but not enough food to tide them over until the following month. Fresh produce, especially oranges and apples are enjoyed. Personal care items such as shampoo, soap, body wash, deodorant, toothbrushes and small toothpastes, etc.  I always try to envision what I would need if I were unhoused.

The Dogtown Little Free Pantry has an Amazon Wish List which is updated regularly with ‘most needed’ items posted at the top.  This can be used as a way to see what we are low on or as a convenient way to order, should you choose.

As requested by the neighborhood, Venmo (@TheresaWeisbrod1960) and PayPal (merrimentandmiscellany@gmail.com) accounts are available.

Large food/other donations should be left on our front porch.  Please feel free to message me with the address or any questions.

Unfortunately there are some items that we cannot accept due to lack of space or because of safety issues.  These include but are not limited to–clothing, coats, bedding, pet food or supplies, medicine, herbal supplements, baby supplies or garage sale leftovers.

Oakland Avenue Playground Ribbon Cutting in Dogtown

Forest Park Forever is excited to announce that the newly reimagined Oakland Avenue Playground will soon open in Dogtown. Dogtown neighbors, business owners, and partners are invited to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the playground on Wednesday, November 3, 2021, at 4:00 p.m.

Construction began on the 1960s-era playground in July of this year and has been focused on creating an accessible and inclusive environment for children of all ages. The design includes safe, durable equipment and safety surfacing, an ADA-accessible path and picnic table, natural wood elements, and opportunities for education and interpretive play.

Dogtown United helped Forest Park Forever and The City of St. Louis connect with the Dogtown community during the initial research and development phase of the project. Many of the design elements are based on the feedback from community members who participated in online and in-person surveys and discovery sessions.

The park is located just east of Turtle Playground. Reservations are not required for the ribbon-cutting event.
